Etsy takes its cut before you count your time. See what an order really costs — listing, transaction, and payment processing fees plus labor and packaging — and price so the fees are built in, not eaten.

The fee math
You sell a dozen decorated sugar cookies on Etsy for $48. Here is where the money goes before you count ingredients, labor, or packaging.
You keep $42.99 of the $48 — before ingredients, labor, packaging, or shipping supplies. And if the order came through Offsite Ads (12–15%, mandatory for some shops), add up to $7.20 more: you keep $35.79.
Typical US Etsy fees as of mid-2026. Fees vary by country, currency, and seller settings — check Etsy's current fee policy and your own statements. RecipePricer is not affiliated with Etsy, and this is not tax or accounting advice.

Each listing renews for $0.20 when it sells or every 4 months — multi-quantity listings renew on every sale
Sturdy boxes, bubble wrap, and cushioning for cookies that survive the mail cost far more than farmers-market bags
Etsy advertises your listings off-platform and takes 12–15% of orders it attributes — mandatory above a revenue threshold
Optional on-platform ads many sellers run to get found — a real per-order cost if you use them
Etsy is a visual search engine. Props, backdrops, and your styling time are part of what each listing costs
Etsy's transaction fee applies to what buyers pay for shipping too, not just the item price

Pricing tips
Percentage fees compound: if you add 9.5% to your target price, Etsy takes 9.5% of the new higher price and you still come up short. Divide by (1 − fee rate) instead — to pocket $48, list at $53.54, not $52.56. The calculator does this automatically.
If your shop is under the revenue threshold, you can opt out of Offsite Ads. If you stay in (or must), decide whether to price every listing to survive a 12–15% ad fee or accept thinner margins on attributed orders. Either is fine — deciding after the sale is not.
Etsy's transaction fee applies to shipping you charge, and "free shipping" just moves postage into your item price. Weigh a packed box, price the postage honestly, and remember the 6.5% on top of it when you set the shipping charge.
